S is for Screen Time

Saying "oh, I don't have cable" is nowhere near as smug as it once was.

At one point, that was a statement dripping in judgement.

"Oh, I don't have cable" really meant "I spend my time doing more important things. I don't know how anyone has time to watch television."

Now, it just means that the speaker probably watches TV online, or through a console, or on Netflix.  And they probably also play games, and text on their phone, and spend hours on Twitter or Facebook.

I don't have cable.

But that doesn't mean that I don't spend too much time staring at a screen.

In between writing, and blogging, and reading blogs, and watching TV shows online, and playing Plants vs Zombies (that game is addictive), and researching whatever it is that I'm geeking out about (at the moment, it's aquaponics), and pretending that I understand Twitter, and - oh yeah - working, I would be embarrassed to tell you how much time I spend staring at a screen every day.

I love my computer.  I really do.

For the past six months, ever since I started Clay Baboons, I've enjoyed starting my day by reading blogs and doing this:

I have always, without fail, visited the blog of every single person who commented here.  More often than not, I also replied to those comments on my own blog.  It was easy to do when I only updated once or twice a week.  My readers are smart, funny people who have interesting things to say.

But this daily blogging has made it really difficult.  My list of new blogs to visit keeps getting longer and longer.  My blog reader had 641 unread posts as of this morning.

Somewhere around the letter J or K, I started feeling twitchy.  I would look at the long list of unread posts, and my over-stuffed inbox, and it would actually make me sad.  I know that there are a million things in the world to get sad about, and having too many funny or thought-provoking things to read really doesn't rate very high on the list of the world's tragedies, but there you have it.  I was sad.

And so somewhere around the letter M, I just kind of gave up.  I read a few blogs, but I didn't even try to keep up anymore.  The list kept getting longer and longer, so I just pretended that it wasn't there.

Instead, I watched and re-watched funny music videos on Youtube, like this:

Only really funny if you've seen the original (which was actually a cover of the real original).

And this:

It's all in palindromes! (and, of course, here's the original by Bob Dylan)

And this:

I love Bret. (lyrics are not exactly kid friendly)

And watching would make me laugh for a few minutes, and then I'd feel sad again because I spent so much time online and accomplished nothing.  And then I'd remember that I still had to write tomorrow's blog post, and empty the dishwasher, and walk the dog.  And then I'd get cranky and stay up too late and get crankier and then be sad some more.

The fact is that this graph that I made a few months ago applies to my life times a million:

I still have my list. I'm still going to visit every single one of your blogs.  But it might take me a while to get there.

For now, I need to turn off my computer and go read an actual book.

Edited to add: we had a bunch of people over for a BBQ and campfire last night. There's a lot of food in the house. The only thing better than curling up with a good book is curling up with a good book and a plate of leftover party food.

  2. I know exactly what you're talking about. =/ Things will calm down in just a few letters and then you'll be able to get caught up though!

  3. Aww, that's quite all right, Stephanie. Just don't let the guilt/sadness overwhelm you! In the meantime, we are still here for you. ^.^

  4. We don't even have a tv and yet I can't live without my little screens. I live them. I spend a ridiculous amount of time staring into their faces.

    Love Clay Baboons!
I know what you mean (and I only have 38 followers). Sometimes you just have to let some things go. None of us will mind Stephanie.

  11. Boy, do I ever understand....same problem here....and I already had over 300 blogs on my reader list from other RVers, motorcyclists, gadget/camera sites, etc. LOL!

  12. I feel your pain! And sadness too! This challenge has been awesome in finding new blogs to read, but I am so overwhelmed with actually reading them all. Honestly, sometimes I just skim down my list and read the new posts with interesting sounding titles. I have a few blogs that I'll read no matter what. But lately I've been picking and choosing.

  13. I've also noticed that my book time has decreased as my computer time has increased. Reading was always my go-to activity when baby was napping and now I'm trying to find ways to get over to the computer while he is attached to my chest so I can keep up with everything.

    1. So true! I can go an entire week without picking up a book now, and I used to be unable to go half a day without reading an actual book. I need more balance.

  14. I definitely agree with there's nothing better than curling up with a book and a plate of something good to eat.

As for the whole blogging list thing - I feel a similar pain with the busy factor. I still consider myself new to the world of blogging. So far I have a few favorite blogs that I HAVE to read (yours being one of them). I'm already struggling with trying to follow those blogs while also trying to find others to add to my list, while still getting other crap done in my life (like cleaning my house).

  15. So its not just me? I mean well, I really do - but my list of blogs to rad has grown so exponentially that it won't fit on my To Do List anymore...I feel your pain. But on the up side, your blog makes me laugh, too - thanks! :)

  16. I feel your pain sister. It's hard to get back to everyone. Sometimes I just close the tabs and try again tomorrow.

  17. I know, I have the same stress - then I do something dumb in an attempt to catch up, like stay up too late or let the kids watch tv when we could be at the park, and I end up feeling worse (plus not catching up). I can say for sure that I've never regretted it when I spent that time getting an extra hour of sleep or playing with the kids or reading a book, so I guess that tells me where my priorities should be, right?

  18. LOL. This is how I feel about twitter. I update my blog. I visit, read, and try and comment on all the bloggers I enjoy reading, I visit facebook and make comments on pictures and status' and at the end of it all I think about how I should try and build a twitter following but its so much work, and so much more people to read...Ugh. And then I look up from my computer and my children are killing eachother and I think...yup time to ignore all these social mediums and be...oh I don't know...social.

  19. That chart is totally my life. And unfortunately I am way to far to the right at the moment. But that's okay, I am deleting tons of bookmarks right now. Not yours of course, because you rock :) Don't get too sad. And after Z you have totally earned a break! But not until you continue the awesomeness that is this alphabet.

  21. I have three days of posts I am trying to catch up on. Do you have any idea how many posts that is? A million. I got sad, too.

    ReplyDelete
  22. As always, Stephanie, you are Too funny! I know what you mean. Even though I usually blog daily, the A to Z has really made me feel like I'm working. Maybe that's a good thing! You're right, reading with a plate of party food has it's advantages. ;-) Just reading more is good too! Rest today!!

  23. I started a good book last night. It is so nice to hold actual pages in my hand. I'm reading Gail Simmons'(from Top Chef) memoir. She is very well-spoken, so I knew her book would be well-written, and I have not been disappointed. I'm only one third of the way into it, and it's great!

Like you, I am looking forward to the end of a to z (I have prewritten the last couple of letters, except for damn "X", but then I also have my travel blog and I have prewritten exactly none. *sigh*).

    best,

  26. Oh honey, hang in there! I haven't had as challenging a time keeping up with comments, but visiting other blogs has been harder than I anticipated. Especially since I want to keep up with the ones I already read on a daily basis. I have met some great new friends, but the sheer number of blogs available out there is a little overwhelming.

You can do it, sweetie! We've just got a week left. Love ya!

  27. You are just too good at making us laugh and your blog is just too cool. You could try boring it up a bit for a while! Seriously though, just do what you can do and don't sweat it. We will still be here.

  28. Relax. We all understand that you're Super-Blogger now. You might want a manager and someone to answer your fan mail. Anyone who gets testy about your being too busy to read their blogs or not respond may be a bit fringe anyway, and who needs that kind of crazy in their life?

P.S. I LOVED the chart. You're on to something there.

  32. The Challenge brings out some interesting things. I can relate to the statement about spending so much time online watching or listening to videos or music. For every one of my posts that involved them I know I spent at least an hour watching other vids by the same group/people. Still I enjoyed it!

  33. LOL; visiting from A/Z. Enjoyed reading this; we have cable but I rarely watch TV, hubby likes it though so I guess we'll keep it. I'm with you; looking at a screen, usually the computer one. I'm also like you, trying only to blog once or twice a week except for this challenge which has been a challenge. I also try to comment to people who comment on my blog; I at least return the visit if a new person comments, but after looking over their blog decide if I'll follow them or not. So many blogs, so many wonderful writers, so little time.

Enjoy the rest of the challenge; we are almost there!!

Crappy TV, reading, work, commenting--it's like a relay race for me. I do something that requires brain power and then hand off my brain for some Real Housewives and so on. :)

  36. I feel you. Thankfully I'm not nearly as popular as you are. :P Just imagine how The Bloggess feels!

btw, I replied to your comment on my blog RE: Philippines. (I thought of leaving the reply here, but just in case someone reads your question there and is curious, I thought I'd keep the A with the Q.)

You know, visiting all those blogs AFTER the April challenge would probably be really cool since hits probably drop off once it's done. So really, you are doing other bloggers a favour by keeping them read. If that makes sense. It's before 9am on a Monday morning so I might not be using all my words properly.

Also, we don't have cable. But we have over 10 computer-like divices so... yeah... screen time. (My hubby works in IT. Did I mention that?)

    1. That's a good idea! Maybe I'll try to visit more A-Z blogs after the challenge is done! I've still managed to hit the 5 per day, though, in between visiting from the main page and returning visits to my blog.

  37. I know the feeling. I don't get sad exactly, but definitely overwhelmed. My blog roll has been expanding a lot recently and if I get caught up at work on Thursday or Friday and then don't read all weekend I have a LOT to catch up on Monday's... like today, right now. You'll catch up eventually.

  38. Leftover party food - yum! It's so much better once it's leftover for some reason! And the first part made me laugh - we didn't own a TV for the first year or more of being here, but we still watched stuff online, it just sounded amazing that we could live without a TV (we couldn't of course, and have one now). But real books still win for me - enjoy it! (PS - what are you reading?!)

But it made me feel 'happy' to know someone else felt 'sad' about the same thing ;) Just wanted you to know I have been feeling the same way!
